The Millom Askam Hematite Iron Co. Ltd. AND The North Lonsdale Iron and Steel Co., Ltd.

These companies have for the past 65 years been producing the purest qualities of West Coast hematite ore and pig iron. The Florence and Ullcoats mines from which the ore is raised are the largest hematite iron ore mines in Great Britain.

A thoroughly modern plant has been installed to crush and screen special deposits of one of the richest ores which is particularly suitable for the malleable castings trade. At Florence mines, Egremont, occurs the Pencil ore in a kidney-shaped formation with a grain radiating from the central nucleus. On fracture the pieces tend to assume the characteristic pencil-point shapes from which the ore receives its name. This is an almost chemically pure form of hematite which is much prized by lapidaries for the production of semi-precious stones due to the high and lasting lustre which it assumes when polished.
