Mohan Meakin Brewery

Late 1820s - Edward Dyer travelled to Kasauli in the Himalayas from England to set up a brewery. It was the first brewery in India and is also the highest brewery in the world situated at more than 6000ft.

This Kasauli brewery launched Asia's first beer Lion. Brewing and distilling equipment was imported from England by sea.

1855 Incorporated as Dyer Breweries or Edward Dyer and Co Ltd.

At some stage the brewery moved to Solan and the Kasauli brewery site was converted to a distillery. Breweries were established at Shimla, Murree, Rawalpindi, Mandalay and Quetta.

1887 H. G. Meakin, moved to India and set up Meakin and Co Ltd. He went on to buy the old Shimla and Solan Breweries from Edward Dyer.

c1920s Meakin and Dyer breweries merged in a joinet venture under Dyer Meakin & Co. Ltd.

1937 Company restructured with Indian assets as Dyer Meakin Breweries, a public company on the London Stock Exchange.

1949 Narendra Nath Mohan took over management of the company and built more breweries at Lucknow, Ghaziabad and Khopoli.

1967 Company name changed to Mohan Meakin Breweries .

1969 Colonel V. R. Mohan took over as Managing Director of the business when his father N.N. Mohan passed away.

1973 Colonel V. R. Mohan died.

In the 1970s the manufacturing activities of the company were diversified into other fields including breakfast cereals, fruit juices and mineral water under the leadership of Brigadier (Dr.) Kapil Mohan (V. R. Mohan's brother).

1980 Company name changed to Mohan Meakin Ltd. as it is still known today.
