Mons Mill, Todmorden

From Graces Guide

1908 'The work in connection with this huge concern seems to be progressing in a satisfactory manner, and perhaps a few particulars will be of interest to our readers. As has been previously stated, the mill has been planned to produce American yarns such as are required in the district and the nearer manufacturing towns, of a quality equal to those produced in the Royton and Shaw districts. The building has been constructed in substantial fire-proof style, free from expensive ornamentation.
The engine has been supplied by Messrs. Creals, Belgium [! Carels Frères -Carels Brothers ], and is the largest ever installed in a spinning mill in any part of the world. It is of 3,500 horse power; tho weight of the low-pressure cylinder is about 25 tons and its diameter eight feet six inches. There will also be a small high pressure cylinder. The main engine pulley flywheel has a diameter of 22 feet, and is cast in six segments, each weighing thirteen tons, the total weight of the complete wheel being 78 tons. It will be driven at 80 revolutions per minute. The boss to carry the huge wheel weighs 22 tons, and the frame on which the engine is supported is cast in one piece weighing 26 tons.
The whole of the power transmission will be means of rope drive, the main pulley being grooved for 69 ropes of 1 5/8 inches diameter. The driving will be direct from the engine pulley to the respective departments, the rope connecting the top storey having to drive 102 feet, necessitating the using of rope over 200 feet long.
Provision has been made for seven boilers, but only four will be necessary to run the one mill. One these has already been placed on its bed, whilst a second will arrive in day or two. The manufacturers are Messrs. Davy Bros., Sheffield. The boilers are 22 feet in length, with a diameter of 8 feet 6 inches. The weight of one boiler is 35 tons, and the working pressure 210lbs.
The reservoir, which is almost completed, will hold nearly two million gallons of water, the depth being 18 feet. The whole of the mill proper is now water tight, and all the brickwork (with the exception of the tower) is practically completed. Fifteen feet above the highest point of the building will be the sprinkler tanks, which are 15 feet square and 7 feet deep. .....'[1]
