MORRIS UDWIN, whose death occurred in April 1942, was associated with water supply engineering during the whole of his career, which was entirely spent in South Africa. He was born in 1889 and educated at the South African College, Cape Town, where he studied with distinction, obtaining a municipal scholarship and taking the first place in examination for three successive years, for which he was awarded the bronze, silver, and gold medals respectively, as well as the Honours Diploma. He graduated B.Sc. in engineering in 1909. He then became a pupil under the chief engineer of the Rand Water Board.
In 1914 he entered the drawing office of the Board and in the succeeding year became acting chief civil engineering assistant, the appointment being confirmed in 1918. His promotion to principal engineering assistant took place in 1926 and five years later he was appointed chief engineer of that undertaking. During his term of office Mr. Udwin was responsible for the design of the additional plant and equipment, to the total value of some £6,000,000 sterling, which was rendered necessary by the great expansion of the Board's functions, the demand for water having more than trebled. After holding this position with distinction for ten years Mr. Udwin retired in 1941.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1929 and was a Member of Council and Past-President of the South African Institution of Engineers. In addition he was a member of the South African Society of Civil Engineers.
