Muntz's Patent Axle Co

From Graces Guide

of Birmingham

Intoduced a method of securing wheels for carts, etc, to their axles. A semicircular groove was machined in the hub and in the axle to accommodate ball bearings. After placing the hub on the axle, ball bearings were introduced through a hole tapped in the hub. The hole was then closed with a plug whose inner end was shaped to conform with the semicircular groove (easier said than done, no doubt). An alternative version used a flexible rod pushed into the groove through a tangential hole.[1]
