Dr. Calvert served a works apprenticeship with British Electric Vehicles and later with Vulcan Motor and Engineering Co. (1906), Ltd. He was awarded a Pickup Entrance Scholarship to the University of Liverpool in 1931, and obtained a B.Eng. degree with first class honours at the School of Mechanical Engineering in 1935.

From 1935 to 1937 he worked as a Research fellow under Professor W. Mason (Member) on fatigue and impact problems. He was appointed assistant lecturer in mechanical engineering at the University of Liverpool in 1937. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1938.

Dr. Calvert was appointed to his present position of lecturer in mechanical engineering at the University of Liverpool in 1940.
