1887 The compound engines of the Suez were replaced by quadruple expansion engines by Central Marine Engineering Co, the first use of this type of engine in Britain[9]
1888 The Darien, carrying coal, was lost in a fierce gale; she had been built at Jarrow in 1881[10]
1893 Edwards Shipbuilding Co, a yard on the North-East Coast of England, received an order for two 5,000t vessels from Nelson, Donkin and Co of London (sic)[11]
