New York, Newfoundland and London Telegraph Co
Owner of the telegraph cables between Newfoundland and Canada and the landline from St. Johns to Cape Ray.
1851 Mr. Tibbet, of New York, and Mr. Frederick N. Gisborne, an Englisb engineer, proposed to shorten the communication between America and Europe, by making St. John's, Newfoundland, a port of call for Atlantic steamers, and constructing a telegraph from there to join the American lines. In 1851 they obtained an Act of the Legislature of Newfoundland, which gave them the necessary powers, and also conferred upon them certain exclusive privileges.
These gentlemen were, however, unable to fulfil the terms of the Act, and they transferred their interest to a new company chiefly promoted by Cyrus Field, Dudley Field, Peter Cooper, Chandler White, Moses Taylor, and Marshall O'Roberts - the New York, Newfoundland, and London Telegraph Company.
1865 The Anglo-American Telegraph Co took over the assets of the company
