The 1849 OS map [2] shows the factory to be a narrow building running from Deansgate to the River Irwell, close to the north east end of Deansgate.
1866 'Crushed to Death.—Yesterday, Mr. Herford, the city coroner, held an inquest on the body of Francis Reynolds, labourer, Lower Albion-street. The deceased was employed at the works of Messrs. Newton, Keats, & Co., coppersmiths, Old Garratt. On the 24th of January he was engaged, with five six other men, in rolling a large cask filled with copper weighing about 14 cwt. along the yard, when the cask was accidentally turned on one end and rolled over, crushing the deceased against a crane. He was very severely injured, and died on Tuesday. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death." '[3]
