NICOLAI ZACKARIASEN was born at Arendal, Norway, on 8th June 1886, and received his education at Hutcheson's Grammar School, Glasgow, with subsequent training in mechanical engineering and technical subjects at the Royal Technical College in that city.
He served his apprenticeship during the years 1904-9 with the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd., Govan, and after completing his terns he spent nearly three years on the staff of Messrs. Home-Morton and Gibson, consulting engineers, Glasgow.
This was followed by eight years or more with Sir William Arrol and Co., Ltd., at the Dalmarnock Works, Parkhead, as draughtsman and later on as leading draughtsman, and in 1920 he joined Messrs. Alexander Chaplin and Co., Ltd., of the Cranstonhill Engine Works, Glasgow, in a similar capacity.
A year later he was engaged by the Anderson-Grice Co., Ltd., Taymouth Engineering Works, Carnoustie, as draughtsman in charge of the crane section of their drawing-office, but illness supervened and compelled him to resign in 1922.
During subsequent years his health did not improve and he died on 7th February 1926.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1920.
