Northwich Gas Co

From Graces Guide

of Northwich, Cheshire

1890 'NORTHWICH. Large gathering of Manchester Gas Engineers. — There was a numerous gathering of members of the Manchester District Institution of Gas Engineers at Northwich on Saturday, when a dinner was held at the Drill Hall, to celebrate the filling of a new gasholder erected for the Northwich Gas Company, on a principle invented by Mr William Gadd, of Manchester. In the new holder great interest was taken by the many eminent gas engineers present, as it is built upon an entirely new principle, which does away altogether with the necessity for the tall columns and latticed girders we are so accustomed to see in connection with gas holders, and the invention in the opinion of many of the engineers present, is destined to effect quite a revolution in what may be called gasworks architecture. In Mr Gadd's invention the gasholder is fitted round the base with rollers, which travel upon and beneath spiral guide rails, placed against the walls of the gas well, so that as the holder fills it revolves spirally upward, and being thus held by the base, it is effectually supported, and is in no need of the side pillars formerly used. The most favourable opinions were expressed by the engineers present as to the stability and efficiency of the new invention, which it was hoped would greatly economise the cost of gaswork construction' [1]
