Mr. Grootenhuis matriculated at London University in 1941 and studied at the City and Guilds College where he graduated B.Sc. (Eng.) with second class honours in 1944.

He obtained his practical training at High Duty Alloys Limited, Slough, and in the engine division at the Bristol Aeroplane Company Limited, Bristol.

He joined the staff of the mechanical engineering department, Imperial College of Science and Technology in 1946 as an assistant lecturer and was appointed lecturer in 1949, during which year he was also awarded the Diploma of the Imperial College.
