P. Kenny, BSc(Hons), obtained the degree in physics from the University of Birmingham in 1956, joined NCB Mining Research Establishment and worked in the field of Rock Mechanics until 1965, when he was granted leave to attend Oxford University. In 1966, he obtained the Diploma in the Science of Materials with distinction, and on his return worked within the Metallurgy Branch at the Establishment. He is at present Head of Applied Materials Science Group: he was elected Fellow of the Institute of Physics in 1971.
