Dr. Whitton received his early training at the Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith, and at the Harris Institute Technical College, Preston. He obtained his practical training at the Preston Works of the English Electric Co. In 1945 he was commissioned in the Royal Signals, serving in Singapore, Malaya.

On leaving H.M. Forces in 1948 he studied for two years at Southampton University for the B.Sc. Degree and graduated with first class honours. He was there awarded the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Prize in 1950.

Under the sponsorship of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research he joined the City and Guilds College, London, and pursued research in metal deformation for which he was awarded the Ph.D. of London University in 1953. In September of that year he was appointed senior lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Melbourne University.

Dr. Whitton is a member of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
