Patrick McGeown
Patrick McGeown (1897-1970) was a steel furnaceman born in Craigneuk in 1897. His parents had emigrated from Ireland.
His fascinating autobiography, Heat the Furnaces Seven Times More, describes his upbringing in Craigneuk, his early experiences in the local steelworks, and his later working life as a furnaceman on open hearth furnaces. It provides an excellent insight into working practices and conditions prevailing during that half-century period.
In 1915 his father, also a furnaceman, obtained employment at the Irlam works of the Lancashire Steel Corporation, and the family soon followed him, initially living in a rented house in Atherton Lane, Cadishead.
1939 Living at Derrybeg, Rothiemay Road, Urmston, Steel Furnaceman (heavy work) with Frances E. McGeown (born 1902).[1]
1963 He retired from the works and became a writer.
