PATRICK ROWE was born at Raj-Mehal, India, on 3rd January 1860.
He was educated at St. Stephen's and La Martiniere College, Calcutta, and subsequently, during his apprenticeship, he became a student at the Government Mechanical Drawing School.
He served his apprenticeship of five years, from 1875 to 1880, hi the engineering workshops of the British India Steam Navigation Co., Calcutta, and then went to sea in the same company's and other firms' steamers as engineer, rising to be second engineer.
In 1889 he joined the Calcutta Port Commissioners' service as second engineer, subsequently becoming engineer-in-charge.
In 1895 he was promoted to be Officiating Superintendent of Machinery, and after acting in other capacities he held the same appointment during 1900-1901.
From the latter year until 1905 he was Assistant Superintendent of Machinery, when the post was abolished and he retired on pension.
He then joined the Boiler Inspection Commission, as inspector for Calcutta and District, and was promoted two years later to be chief boiler inspector for the district of Assansole, Burdwan and Jherria.
He was taken ill in October 1910, and underwent a serious operation in the General Hospital, Calcutta, from which he slowly recovered; he then undertook a voyage to England to recoup his health, but he became suddenly ill again, and died in the Arabian Sea on 3rd May 1911, at the age of fifty-one.
He became an Associate Member of this Institution in 1905.
