From Graces Guide

Pickford introduced Crompton's spinning mule to a number of places in France. He was encouraged by the French government to produce textile machinery. They provided him with a workshop, lodgings, and a grant of 6000 livres, and paid him 300 livres for each machine he produced.[1]
