Philip Meadows Martineau (c1832-1911) of David Martineau and Sons
1911 January. Died. 'By the death Mr. Philip Meadows Martineau, J.P., London in general, and the Borough of Stepney in particular, have lost one who worked long and splendidly for his fellows. Mr. Martineau was one of the old school public workers who were to a singular degree conscientious and regular in the discharge of their duties. As Justice the Peace for the Counties of Middlesex and London, and a Guardian in St. George's East for 30 years, he devoted a sound judgment and great care to the business in hand. Death took place on Tuesday at his residence, Littleworth, Esher, Surrey. The deceased gentleman was in his 80th year, and had lived for the past 45 years at Esher. As the name suggests, Mr. Martineau was of French extraction, the family coming over with the Huguenots. When the sugar industry was at its height in the East End, he was member of David Martineau and Sons, one of the last of the firms of sugar refiners....'[1]
