PHILIP PERCIVAL CHANNON was born at Cheltenham on 8th September 1870, and was educated at local private schools.
In June 1886 he began a three-years' apprenticeship at the Oldbury Works, Tewkesbury, and from there went to the Cheltenham Gas Co. for three years, afterwards gaining experience at the New Swindon Gas Works.
In 1894 he became manager of the Haywards Heath Gas Co., and in 1900 was appointed its engineer and manager, subsequently combining with this the duties of secretary. During the period of his association with the Company the output of gas at the works was increased fourfold.
He was the pioneer, in the Home Counties, in the use of vertical retorts and high-pressure gas distribution.
His death took place at Haywards Heath on 4th November 1918, at the age of forty-eight.
He was elected an Associate Member of this Institution in 1902; he was also a Member of the Institution of Gas Engineers.
