1987/8 Electronic Systems and Equipment accounted for more than one-third of Plessey's turnover. This part of the business was predominantly in the defence field; principal activities were radar, underwater systems, defence systems, military communications, avionics, cryptographic equipment and microprocessor-based systems.

Plessey had a strong base in North America; 60 per cent of its defence order book was from outside the United Kingdom.[1]
