'Dragon's Bridge', Rhyl, Denbighshire

The bridge crosses Foryd Harbour, at the mouth of the river Clwyd. The two leaves of the deck can be raised to allow the passage of yachts. The composite deck is 32 metres long. This bridge was opened in October 2013, providing a welcome alternative to Foryd Bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

With its abundance of cables, a pair of large hydraulic rams, and very discrete joints at the ends of the decks, the mode of operation is by no means obvious. The standard of workmanship is very impressive.

The bridge was designed by Gifford (now part of Ramboll). Built by Dawnus. Fabrication of the two boat-inspired bascule decks was by AM Structures.
