"RUPERT ALEXANDER STRUTHERS, M.C., B.Sc., whose death occurred on 12th April 1951 at the age of fifty-two, was assistant chief engineer of the steam turbine engineering department of the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company, Ltd., and had been with that firm throughout his professional career.
He was educated at the Victoria University of Manchester, where he graduated B.Sc. in engineering in 1917. He then obtained a commission in the Royal Engineers (T.A.) and was on active service in France and Germany. After the 1914-18 war, in 1920, he joined Messrs. Metropolitan-Vickers at Manchester as a college apprentice and on the completion of his training two years later was appointed assistant engineer and forthwith was closely concerned with the design of steam turbine plant.
In 1930 he went to Leningrad as technical liaison engineer for the firm's export branch and as assistant to the chief mechanical engineer. He also acted as consultant to the factories of the U.S.S.R. Turbine Trust. On his return from Sweden in 1934, where he had been studying the designs and operation of the Ljungstrom locomotive turbine, he became closely associated with the development of the steam turbine 4-6-2 locomotive which went into service with the L.M.S.R. in 1935.
Subsequently, and since the formation of the steam turbine engineering department, of which he was appointed assistant chief engineer in February 1950, Mr. Struthers had been engaged on the design of large steam turbines in connexion with many important contracts for power stations both in Great Britain and overseas. He was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1923, transferred to Associate Membership in 1925, and to Membership in 1949."
