1954.

1954 Bio Note [1]

Mr. Sims was educated at St. Bonaventure's school and at London University where he received a Bachelor's Degree in physics. He served with the Meteorological Branch of the Royal Air Force from 1939 to 1946 and, on demobilisation, accepted an engineering training appointment with Baker Perkins of Peterborough.

He became head of the Rolling Mill Research Laboratories of The British Iron and Steel Research Association (B.I.S.R.A.) in Sheffield in 1948 and carried out research on the mechanics of hot and cold rolling, on mill instrumentation and, in particular, on automatic gauge control.

Mr. Sims took up his present appointment as research manager with Davy and United Engineering Company Limited in January 1953 and carried on the commercial exploitation of automatic gauge control. He retained, however, a consultancy with B.I.S.R.A. and led a joint team which completed the research on gauge control problems.
