Mr. Lister served his apprenticeship with the Appleby-Frodingham Iron and Steel Co., Ltd.; he was awarded a Lincolnshire Ironmasters Scholarship in 1932 and received the Diploma of Associateship in Engineering of Sheffield University in 1934. He graduated B.Sc. (Eng.) at the University of London in 1935 and after a short period in the design office joined the staff of the Road Research Laboratory where he was engaged on the study of skidding and allied problems.

During the 1939-45 war he was seconded to the Admiralty where he carried out development work on minesweeping and mining equipment.

Since 1946 he has been with the Traffic and Safety Division of the Road Research Laboratory and has been working on problems of road safety connected with vehicle design and performance.
