Commander R. F. A. Whately, RN, MA, Secretary of the North East Coast Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders from 1962, died suddenly on 28th February.

Between 1946 and 1958 he served on the Admiralty Staff at the Royal Naval College Greenwich as Principal Lecturer and also in the Home Fleet, being promoted to the rank of Commander in 1953.

Commander Whately did much to further the closest possible relations between shipbuilding, ship-owning and engineering firms and also between the industry and universities.
