1888 Robert Hall Longbotham established the firm as consulting engineer in London. In the same year he acquired the Ings Foundry and Engineering Works at Wakefield.

An 1894 horizontal duplex steam winch by R. H. Longbotham & Co is on display at Woodhorn Museum, Ashington.
