R. Lucas, HNC, Member, was educated at Euclid Street Grammar School and The Technical College Swindon. He completed a premium engineering apprenticeship with GWR at Swindon, where he gained ONC and HNC with distinction, returning there after World War 2.

After a brief period as design engineer with Dunlop Aviation Division he joined Courtaulds Ltd, Coventry in 1951 where he was employed as Design and Project Engineer for a number of installations within UK and in Russia involving environmental engineering. In 1970 he was transferred to Research Division with special responsibilities for exploitation of carbon fibre applications within the Courtaulds Group. He became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1945 and subsequently a Member.
