1922 'Mr. Rex G. Mundy, winner of numerous trophies and a hundred gold medals in motor bicycle and car competitions Great Britain and on the Continent, Friday afternoon successfully drove a touring car with a load of fourteen up, down and up the pebble-pitched High-street, Clovelly. The gradient at places is as steep as one-in-four, and as the car mounted the forty-one steps from the Look-Out to the top of the street, its performance was watched by villagers and visitors with a great deal of interest. No special non-skidding devices were used on the wheels.'
