Born the son of John Tonkin, a Clay Agent. (He was the son of another John Tonkin, a farmer)

1911 Residing at Fernly Terrace, Bugle, St Austell: John Tonkin (age 50 born St. Austell), China Clay Agent. With his wife Phillipa Tonkin (age 49 born Withiel) and children Preston George Tonkin (age 22 born Roche), China Clay Agent; Beatrice Annie Tonkin (age 19 born Roche); Reginald Tonkin (age 16 born Roche), Carpenter; Ralph Tonkin (age 10 born Roche); and Garth S. Tonkin (age 7 born Roche).[1]
