Born in Leeds in 1851.

1883 Partnership with John Taylor (1861-1945) established in Bolton to manufacturer fire appliances, as 'Dowson and Taylor, Fire Engineers'. This business, together with the Grinnell Sprinkler department of Mather and Platt, of the Salford Iron Works, Manchester, was in 1888 merged in to a private limited company under the title of Dowson, Taylor & Co. Ltd.

1896 Ralph Taylor died in India on 3 April, while on a business trip.
