REGINALD FRANCIS HALLIWELL was born in London, on 17th July 1871, and received his early education at private schools in Brighton and at the Brighton College, this being supplemented by attendance at the local science schools.
He served his apprenticeship during 1887-1892 in the locomotive shops of the London Brighton and S.C. Railway, and on completing his term he went to sea as fourth engineer on the S.S. "Pathan," of the Mogul Line.
About three years later, in 1894, he gave up seafaring, and after spending some years as draughtsman with various engineering firms, including Messrs. Hornsby and Son, Ltd., of Grantham, Messrs. Willans and Robinson, Ltd., of Rugby, and Tubes, Limited, of Birmingham, he became engaged. in 1903 in the same capacity with the British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., Rugby.
In the turbine department of this firm - after a short break of a few months, which he spent at Chiswick in the works of Messrs. Thornycroft - he remained up to the date of his death, this connexion covering a period of more than twenty years, during which he was responsible as steam-turbine designer for a great deal of important work. Mr. Halliwell died on 10th October 1925.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1919.
