1889 Edgar Rhodes and his brother (presumably Walter Rhodes) started a partnership as general engineers and makers of special machinery - Rhodes Brothers, Leeds.

Amongst the special projects were a scale model of the triple expansion engines of SS Alfonzo XII (Tweedys Patent) for Wigham, Richardson and Co, and experiments casting tubes and linings under centrifugal pressure for Messrs Whitley Partners. Also made railway carriage fittings and ventilators.
