RICHARD HEBER RADFORD was born in Manchester on 21st May 1839, being the eldest son of the late Mr. Joseph Radford, one of the founders of this Institution.
He served a probationary apprenticeship with Messrs. Beyer, Peacock and Co., of Gorton, Manchester, and was afterwards articled, in 1858, to Mr. J. B. Palmer, of Palmer Brothers and Co., Jarrow-on-Tyne.
From 1864 to 1868 he was engaged in partnership with his father, and in 1867 he was appointed by H.M. Treasury as inspecting engineer in the Railways (Ireland) Commission. Since that time he has been intimately associated with Sheffield and elsewhere as consulting engineer and valuer, and has been engaged on some of the largest works in the kingdom. He acted as honorary secretary to the Sheffield Meeting of this Institution in 1890.
His death took place at Sheffield on 11th August 1917, at the age of seventy-eight.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1878; he was also a Member of the Institution of Naval Architects and of the Iron and Steel Institute, and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents.
