RICHARD SHARP had practised as a consulting engineer since 1905 and had held various appointments, including that of consulting engineer to the Workington Harbour and Dock Board.

He was associated with the reinforced concrete bridge at Floriston, near Gretna, and various other works in the district.

He commenced his engineering career in the works of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincoln Railway at Sheffield, and continued his training as an improver in the drawing office at the Cyclops Works of Messrs. Charles Cammell and Company.

From 1874 to 1878 he was assistant engineer to Messrs. Wilson and Cammell of Dronfield, and during the following three years was engaged as assistant locomotive superintendent of the Sheffield district of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincoln Railway.

He then took charge as chief engineer of the Cumberland property of Messrs. Charles Cammell and Company, and carried out considerable extensions to the firm's steel plant, quarries, harbour works, railways, etc.

Upon resigning this position in 1905 he visited the leading iron and steel works of the United States prior to commencing private practice.

Mr. Sharp became a Member of the Institution in 1905.

His death occurred on 21st September 1928, in his seventy-fifth year.
