RICHARD WILLIAM DEACON was born at Bridgwater, Somersetshire, on 4th November 1849.
On completing his school education, he was entered as an apprentice with the Taff Vale Railway, at the Cardiff Works, his term being completed in 1870.
In February 1871 he went to sea as a marine engineer, and in September of the same year he entered the service of the Netherlands Steam Navigation Company, becoming a Chief Engineer in that line in February 1874.
In March 1875 he left that duty to become manager of the Company's Works in Java, until October of the same year.
He then joined an engineering firm at Sourabaya, Java, and with that business he was connected for some years.
Illness, however, caused him to return to England in 1883, and during the next few years, as health permitted, he undertook engineering work in the Midlands.
In 1907 he came to London and practised as consulting engineer, until illness caused his retirement from active business.
He died on 21st February 1925 at Kew Gardens, London, from heart failure after a short illness.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1880.
