1931 Obituary [1]

RICHARD WOODHOUSE died on 2nd February 1931 in his eighty-ninth year.

He was a director of Messrs. Woodhouse and Mitchell of Brighouse, and had been governing director until his retirement from active control of the business in 1926.

He received his early training in the office of Mr. William McNaught of Manchester, and afterwards was employed as a draughtsman by Messrs. John Wood and Company of Sowerby Bridge.

In 1867 four employees of the firm decided to commence business on their own account, and established at Brighouse the firm of which Mr. Woodhouse eventually took control under the name of Wood, Baldwin and Company, later changed, on the death of Mr. Wood and the retirement of Mr. Baldwin, to its present style. A number of factories have been equipped with engines made by the firm, who also carried out important contracts abroad.

Mr. Woodhouse had been a Member of the Institution since 1905.
