River Douglas Swing Bridge (Lancashire)

From Graces Guide

The River Douglas bridge carried the West Lancashire Railway's Southport and Preston Railway over the River Douglas at Hesketh Bank.

1882 The bridge was initially refused approval by the Board of Trade inspector.

The bridge was an iron structure with 24 cylindrical piles sunk into the river bed. The central group of piles supported the swing span. The span was worked by a water hydraulic system.

It appears to have been little used for river traffic, and was fixed in position in September 1913.

The bridge was demolished after the line between Hesketh Park and Penwortham Junction closed on 7 September 1964.

The above information is condensed from the excellent Disused Stations website. See here.
