Adshead's 1851 Maps of Manchester show Charlton & Sons Calender Works on the east side of St Mary's Parsonage at its junction with Blackfriars, close to Blackfriars Bridge (on the Manchester side of the River Irwell). The 1849 O.S. map identifies only the southern end of the block (adjacent to Parsonage Lane) as a 'Cotton Finishing Works', the northern part being 'Irwell Buildings'.
