In an editorial in The Engineer in January 1863, it was stated that Richard Roberts’ first planing machine (introduced in 1817) '.…lately was, and perhaps still is, at work at Robert Chidlaw’s, Great Bridgewater-street, Manchester'.

1885 Advert: 'ROBERT CHIDLAW, Deceased.— Notice is hereby, given that the BUSINESS of a Wheel Cutter and Machinist, lately carried on by the deceased, at 41, City-road, Hulme, has been TRANSFERRED TO his Son ROBERT CHIDLAW, who will continue the business as hitherto. All persons having any claims against the deceased's Estate, are desired to send in the same at once to us, the undersigned, in order that they may be discharged.— Dated this tenth day of March, 1885. CHAPMAN, ROBERTS, & BECK, Solicitors, 32, Fountain-street, Manchester.'[1]
