ROBERT CLAY JONES, managing director of Messrs. Turnbull and Jones, of Dunedin, New Zealand, died on the 4th August, 1928.
Apprenticed to a jeweller, he became interested in electricity in connection with electro-plating and gilding.
In 1879, in conjunction with Mr. J. K. Logan, telegraph inspector, he installed a system of fire-alarms in Dunedin.
Later, as chief electrician to the Union Steam Ship Co., whom he. joined in 1885, he was responsible for the electrical installations in many well-known boats.
In 1889 he was appointed consulting engineer to the Sandhills Gold Dredging Co., and was engaged in designing plant for the transmission of power and its utilization for dredging and pumping purposes.
In conjunction with the late Mr. Robert Turnbull, of Wellington, whose interests lay in the same direction, he founded the firm with which he remained connected until his death.
He joined the Institution as an Associate in 1887 and became a Member in 1893.
