"ROBERT DAVID MACKINTOSH spent over fifty years of his career in South Africa, where his death occurred on 2nd August 1951 in his eightieth year.
He served an apprenticeship with James Copeland and Sons, from 1889 to 1895, passing through the shops and drawing office, and concurrently attending classes at the West of Scotland Technical College. After gaining experience as a junior in the drawing offices of Pott, Cassels and Williamson, Motherwell, and Bow and McLachlan, Paisley, he began his long connection with South Africa in 1899 with the post of chief draughtsman to Thomas Begbie and Company, Ltd., Johannesburg. After some service with the Frontier Light Horse in the South African war, Mr. Mackintosh found employment as draughtsman with the Natal Government Railways and the Consolidated Johannesburg Investment Co.
From 1907 to 1909 he was engaged by the New Kleinfontein Gold Mines Co on the erection of their new plant and for the next two years was chief draughtsman to Brakpan Mines, Ltd. In 1910 he rejoined Thomas Begbie, taking over the duties of engineer, and shortly afterwards becoming a partner. He remained with the firm until the close of his active career. Mr. Mackintosh had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1909. "
