Robert Greenwood Tarran (1892-1955) of Tarran Industries

Born at Hull the son of Arthur Tarran, a Joiner.

1939 Residing at 721 Beverley High Road, Kingston-upon-Hull, Civil Engineering Contractor. With Alice Tarren (b.1892) and Denis G. Tarren (b.1921).[1]

1955 Died. 'Mr Robert Greenwood Tartan whose death was announced in Hull yesterday began business as a builder in 1919 in a loft for which he paid half-a-crown a week. Later he had contracts worth millions. Mr. Tarran, who was 63, was employing 3,000 men by 1937 and began the biggest block of flats in Europe, the 939-dwelling Quarry Hill Estate at Leeds. In 1941 he had contracts valued at £3m., fortifying a large part of Britain's coast against invasion. During the war, he raised a company of Royal Engineers from his firm, and replaced them with women. He afterwards established a business at Perth. but maintained his contacts with Hull.'[2]
