ROBERT MONTEITH MACNAUGHT was born in 1875 and received his education at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. His apprenticeship was served in the locomotive works of Messrs. Dubs and Company, Ltd., of Glasgow, from 1891 to 1893, and with Messrs. Fraser and Chalmers, Ltd., of Erith, from 1893 to 1897. After a brief period of employment with Messrs. Capel and Company, gas engineers of Dalston, as erector and tester, he served at sea for four years as marine engineer in ships of the China Mutual Steamship Company and the Bucknall Lines, and during this period obtained his Board of Trade first-class Engineer's Certificate.
On the conclusion of a brief appointment as chief engineer to the British Ore Concentration Company, North Wales, where he was in charge of the erection of bridges and plant, he was appointed engineer in the refineries of the Mond Nickel Company at Clydach, South Wales, with responsibility for the management of the plant process and control of the personnel. After holding this position for eighteen years he accepted an appointment as chief engineer to Messrs. A. Boake, Roberts and Company, of Stratford, and took charge of the chemical and mechanical engineering department. On leaving Messrs. Roberts in 1928 he became managing director of the Lennox Foundry Company, Ltd., New Cross, London, where he was primarily concerned with the manufacture of corrosion-resisting metals and chemical plant; but in 1938 he returned to Messrs. Roberts and was engaged in his former capacity until his death, which occurred on 20th February 1944.
Mr. Macnaught was elected a Member of the Institution in 1924.
