1889 Died. '...He commenced business in Gold-street as a working shoemaker, and while there he began manufacture in small way till he found it necessary to remove to larger premises in Alma-street. While in Alma-street his business considerably increased, but owing to some heavy losses he sustained he was obliged make an arrangement with his creditors. Nothing daunted this reverse, however, he set himself to work to retrieve his fortune, and had the satisfaction of doing increased and remunerative business. So large did his business become that he had again to remove to larger premises, this time at Wood-street. Whilst living in Wood-street. Mr. Rudlen called his former creditors together, and discharged the balance remaining on his former debts, a proceeding which earned for him the name of "Honest Bobby" a sobriquet by which he was familiarly known. In more recent years he removed to the New Estate, where he built a commodious factory, as well number of houses. Two or three years ago he gave up part of his business and let his large warehouse Messrs. Walker, Kempson and Co....'[1]
