Born 1940, studied at Oundle and the University of Birmingham, and in 1961 entered the family firm, Burman and Sons, a long-standing manufacturer of machinery and in particular motorcycle gearboxes.

1971 He moved to the electronic instrument manufacturing company, Teledictor and became its chairman in 1976
