1862 James Wilcocks Hill married Sarah Gee Cuming at Exeter. JWH was the son of James Hill, a Ropemaker, of Black Boys Road.

1871 James Wilcocks Hill, a Ropemaker, is living with his wife Susannah at 24 Black Boys Road (a general shop).[1] Note: Streets were quite commonly re-numbered so this may be the same premise as 29/30 Black Boy Road.

1877 July 30th. Death of James Wilcocks Hill. Probate to his wife Susannah Gee Hill.

1881 Living at 29 and 30 Rope Makers Arms and Gen Shop, Blackboy Road, Exeter: Susannah Gee Hill (age 47 born Modbury), Grocer and Beer Seller - Widow. With her sister, niece and nephew.[2]

1891 Living at 29/30 Black Boys Road (Ropemakers Arms), Exeter: Susannah G. Hill (age 60 born Modbury), Grocer and Innkeeper - Widow. With her sister and three visitors.[3]

1897 Listed at 29/30 Black Boy Road. Mrs S. Hill, Beer Retailer.[4]

1900 'Simon Bawden, landlord of the Ropemakers' Arms, Blackboy Road, was fined 10s and costs for being drunk on his licensed premises on the 20th inst.'[5]

1902 January. 'The license of the Ropemakers' Arms was transferred from Mr. Simeon Morgan to Mr. Ernest Morgan'[6]

1902 October. 'At the City Police Court yesterday the licence of the Ropemakers' Arms was transferred from Mr. C. Morgan to Mr. W. C. Chambers lately in the employ of the Great Western Railway Company as a carman.'[7]

1906 Listed at 29/30 Black Boy Road. William Thomas Chambers, Beer Retailer.[8]

1911 Living at 29/30 Black Boy Road: John Whensley (age 47 born Templecombe), Licensee. With Alma and three daughters.[9]

1926 Listed at 29/30 Black Boy Road. Jn. Whensley, Beer Retailer.[10]

1930 Listed at 29/30 Black Boy Road. Mrs Alma Whensley, Beer Retailer.[11]

1937 'Mr. Charles Miller, former Exeter City full back, was granted a protection order the Exeter Justices Monday in respect of the Ropemakers' Arms, Blackboy-road. The application for the transfer to Mr. Miller from Mr. S. Field was made by Mr. M. J. McGahey.'[12]

1939 Living at 29 & 30 Roper Makers Arms, Blackboy Road, Exeter: Charles Miller (Born 1902), Licensed Victualler. With Margaret R. Miller (Born 1904) and one other.[14]

1955 Listed at 29/30 Blackboy Road. F. J. Nicholls, Ropemakers' Arms Inn.[15]

1966 Listed at 29/30 Black Boy Road. Ropemakers' Arms.[16]

1966 Listed at 29/30 Blackboy Road. Ropemakers' Arms. Four Moffatts and two Moyse persons.[17]
