Rowlinson (Brokers), Liverpool

Rowlinson, Sons & Co and later John Rowlinson, were brokers who seem to have dealt mainly in high value imported commodities. They placed numerous adverts between 1850 and 1876. See below for some examples.

1850 Advert: 'Monday next, the 15th instant, at twelve o'clock, at the Brokers' office, 15, Tempest-hey, 127 Tons Domingo LOGWOOD, 45 Tons LIMA WOOD, 23 Tons Bimas SAPANWOOD, per Sunbeam, from Boston, in Waterloo Dock
—Apply to Messrs. Train and Co. Merchants, or to ROWLINSON, SONS and Co., Brokers.'[1]

1854 Advertising 30 tons of Puerto Cabello Fustic, 51 casks of gum arabic and 370 bags of Tyrol Sumach (Rowlinson, Sons & Co).

1874 Advert: 'SALE AT LIVERPOOL. At the BROKER’S OFFICE, 13, TEMPEST-HEY, LIVERPOOL, On TUESDAY, December 22, at One, CALISAYA BARK, 71 Sernus Quill, 3 Ditto Flat

1875 Advertising 29 tons of Corozo nuts.

1876 Advertising 'RUBBER, 229 slabs and 9 bales Cartagena, ex sundry vessels.' [3]

The building shown in the 2017 photograph was still standing in 2020. It is located near the former Exchange Station on Tithebarn Street.

Joseph Sharples[4] informs us that the building shown in the 2017 photograph was designed in 1849 by William Culshaw for Messrs. Rowlinson, Brokers. Their offices were on the ground floor, with a sales room above, the remaining floors being for storage and warehousing.
