Royal Aller Vale Pottery

Aller Vale Pottery, maker of earthenware domestic goods, of Torquay

1865 John Phillips, a clay merchant, started a pottery under the name of J. Phillips and Co

1870 Listed as "Phillips, John & Co., manufacturers of architectural pottery and firebricks"

1870 Mr. Phillips (Aller Pottery Works, near Newton Abbot).[1]

1876 'Messrs J. Phillips and Co., of the Aller Pottery Works, exhibited a neat collection of cheap terra-cotta, and light yellow ware'[2]

1879 July 12th. The principal building of the Aller Pottery Works destroyed by fire.[3]

1881 John Phillips started the Aller Vale Art Pottery

1881 Mr. John Phillips, of the Aller Pottery Works, lectured on this subject.[4]

1886 After a visit by Princess Louise, a daughter of Queen Victoria, the name became the Royal Aller Vale Pottery

1887-1901 The company's wares were stocked by Liberty and Co, London.

1897 Phillips died; the company was acquired by Hexter, Humpherson and Co

1898 Mr W. Hexter, from the Royal Aller Vale Pottery.[5]

1901 Amalgamated it with another of their acquisitions, Watcombe Pottery. The new firm was known as the Royal Aller Vale and Watcombe Pottery Co.

1962 The company continued to produce pottery until 1962.
