Royal Belfast Academical Institution

From Graces Guide

Early 19th century: the Institution was founded by the public subscription of the citizens of Belfast.

1810 The foundation stone of the John Soane-designed building was laid.

1814 Belfast Academical Institution opened on 1st February, as both a school for pupils and a college for students.

1845 The government decided to set up the Queen's Colleges in Ireland, which spelt the end of the Collegiate Department of the Institution. A considerable number of the Institution's professors transferred to the Queen's College, Belfast (later Queen's University, Belfast).

From 1849 until the present day, the Institution has been a school for pupils only.
