Royal Naval Torpedo Factory, Alexandria

From Graces Guide

1914 Argyll Motors sold its Alexandria factory to the Royal Navy for torpedo production.

1937 As re-armament proceeded, the government purchased a factory at Alexandria, Dunbartonshire, to expand torpedo production.

1943 the urgent need to expand development led to the creation of a separate entity, the Torpedo Experimental Establishment, at Greenock on part of the factory site. By degrees production was moved from Greenock to the Alexandria factory which then became RNTF, a process completed by 1947.

1969 The factory closed

1971 the factory was acquired by The Plessey Co UK, at that time manufacturers of the Mk44 torpedo.

However, Plessey's production unit closed within a year.
